Why are some of my keys not working?

Hi, most of a row of my keys stopped responding about a month a go. Has anybody experienced this problem before and have any idea how to fix it? There wasn’t any water damage. I didn’t drop or damage the laptop physically they literally just stopped as I was using them.

The keys that stopped working were: Q W E R T Y U I O

The rest of the keys on that row still work along with the rest of the keyboard.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Your keyboard is an arrangement of switches laid-out in a matrix (X & Y) similar on how a phones keypad is laid-out.

As some rows have more keys than others the layout is not straight forward. The row of letters you have that are not working are within the same row but each is connected to a different column line. More often than not in this series is the ribbon cable connection to the logic board is having problems or the ribbon cable its self is damaged.

Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 Logic Board Replacement for the first four steps, then jump down to Step 11 which is where the keyboard ribbon connector is see if you have any damage to either the ribbon or connector. Also look for any staining or corrosion. You can try cleaning the ribbon with a pink pencil eraser going with the direction of the contacts.

Let us know what you find and if you see something take some pics and paste them here for us to see.

Hi Dan. No luck I'm afraid, I followed the instructions in the guide and cleaned the ribbon attachment with a pink eraser. As far as I could tell there was no damage or corrosion visible.
