Motherboard quit working and best solution?

13.3" MacBook Air dual-core Intel Core i7 2.0GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB, Mac OS X Lion

This is the computer we bought in 2017 and was re-furbished on Amazon.

One year later the screen quit working. At u-break, i-fix it, they told us it was the motherboard needed to replaced. They said to buy one on the internet and they would fix it for $100. Is this the best solution and is it worth fixing?

Also, if YES, what motherboard do I buy?

We thought the computer was a 2012 but it might be a 2011. Does anyone have any suggestions/thoughts?

Thanks - Martha

First let’s find out what you have. Please go here and enter the serial number from the back of your machine:

Next I want you to hook it up to an external monitor and see if it generates a video output.

UPDATE

I changed the icon to your 2012 machine. Now there are probably two serial number printed on the RAM encasement. One should match the machines external serial number. The other is the # for the logic board.

Does your’s match? Here’s how to remove the bottom cover:

Martham, you probably need an Hdmi to minidisplay cable adapter.

You can check what's exactly your MBA through your serial number, but since it's a refurbished and it doesn't work anymore the number you'll find on the bottom plate might be not corresponding to your logic board inside. Without precise infos on what you have it's impossible to guide you on a logic board purchase, which in any case I would not recommend to buy and have it installed by a third party for a number of reasons you can imagine. In my opinion it would be best to find a lab performing components level repairs..probably cheaper in the end and you'd find somebody taking full responsability for the end result.

Take the macbook to the nearest workshop and have a technician to take a look to your motherboard, it could be an electrical problem like a protection diode
