partitioning hard drive error

I get a error when I try to partition my hard drive saying input/output error what does this mean and what can I do to partition my hard drive?

Try formatting the disk first using the "write zero" option. Mac OS Extended. Now try to partition it. This failing tell me about the drive, brand, size, new or used. Why the old drive is being replaced and where the new came from. Thanks

An I/O error usually indicates a bad drive or failing controller/cable. You should try returning the drive for a replacement. I would like to suggest you to do partition of your Mac drive by using Stellar partition Manager, it has great features. Let me know.
