Why does apple icon shift to the left when trying to install os

I replaced hard drive, and held the c button while rebooting and the apple icon appeared on screen, install disc starting spinning but the apple icon just shifted to the left a little and nothing happened

Has it happened multiple times? I would try booting into option mode (hold down the option key instead of "C") and see if that makes a difference.

I'd try removing expansion RAM, Airport, and battery, and then reset the PMU and PRAM, and try again.

If that doesn't work, I'd probably open the machine back up and check for loose connections and loose screws bouncing around inside. It sounds as if the computer is crashing, and I've seen things like that happen from a loose screw shorting out the logic board...you might want to try shaking it lightly to see if you hear screws rattling around inside.

Do you use the original installation disk for this iBook (grey disk) ? Only original disk or retail disk (black one) will allow an installation on your iBook.

Sounds like you didn't boot the install disk

and format the HD. If the new drive is over 128GB it needs to be partitioned first (a boot partition <128GB is required for system).
