Dark screen after apple logo, only when desktop loads?

Got a macbook 2008 from a friend and trying to fix it for her. The screen works perfectly in single user mode and during bootup but once it gets to the blue screen just before the desktop login it becomes very dim (but still barely visible if you look very hard).

She was told it was the logic board, and that the OS was corrupt and then was asked for $800 to repair it, but i offered to check on here before paying out any money.

I plugged in my 20inch and reinstalled the OS (10.6) with no problem but cant get the screen brightness up on the macbook at all.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this or what i can do to fix it?

After the screen goes dark, hold a flashlight at an angle to the screen and see if you can see the desktop. If it works on an external then your problem is most likely the inverter. For the correct part please give us the last three numbers of your serial number (found in the battery compartment).

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I can barely see the desktop and it works quite well on my external monitor.

the last 3 characters of the serial are:

full serial just incase: W88296SC0P1
