starts up but wont load OS

I have the apple on the screen, and the working indicator spinning underneath it but it is stuck in this mode. I have to unplug it, and it will be like this untillthe battery dies or is removed. I hear what sounds to be the hard drive attempting to read. Any ideas as to whats wrong?

Options

Try booting from the install disk or into target disk mode. If you can do either (and if you can boot to the disk, then verify your driver) you can rule out bad HDD.

You should also reset your PRAM.
