That's a natural consequence of adding files. Video, music, and image files in particular can take up a huge amount of room. Could that be the issue?
Another possibility -- some versions of Photoshop can end up using huge amounts of hard drive space for cache while running. If you have Photoshop running, try quitting the program and restarting your computer to see if that opens up hard drive space.

Running cocktail can help, especially if you turn your computer off, cron jobs are set to run at night to clean up (delete) temporary files. If it's always off then, that never happens.
Some browsers (Safari is one) are known to never reset their cache. Browser cache files have run into several GBs.
