Both USB ports not working

This laptop was handed down to me, by my brother. When the first USB port stopped working—several months ago—I didn't get it repaired because I always use a usb doc anyway. Today, the second usb port stopped working. I shutdown, and restarted my laptop multiple times, but neither port seems to be working. However, on one occasion, I had my mouse plugged into the port that was previously broken, and my mouse worked for 2 minutes, then lost connection again. I've plugged different devices into each port, to make sure it's just not my mouse, or iPhone charger that were broke. what should i do? if i need to get them both fixed, how much will it cost me if i go through apple?

Apple will now tell you that it's a "legacy machine" due to it age and will turn it down for repair.
