Good idea! @mayer I forgot about this. It will at least buy him some time before having to go for an external drive.

@danj Hum, Maine lobster cooked on the beach? All we get around here is Spiny lobster https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panulirus_...

by

Don't know about the beach ;-}

I often do it right onboard the boat after catching them by hand! (legally of course).

@danj That's a long boat ride to Southern Cal from Maine, you might want to start now.

@mayer - Are you hinting on something here... ;-}

A few of us rent a sailboat and take it out to one of the islands for a long weekend (Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket) If we have a bit more time we have also gone all the way to Block island going though the Cape Cod canal. Going to San Luis Obispo by sailboat would be a bit far for me ;-}

Do you own a lobster bib? You might need one.

Apple never offered a 2 TB drive for this system, the largest they offered was a 1 TB drive. OWC is the only 3rd party suppler of SSD's for this series. They too only offer 1 TB.

Apple is now offering a 2 TB drive option on the very newest models but they are not compatible with yours (soldered to the logic board) for a very short time Apple did offer a PCIe x4 drive for the older 2015 model just before the new model came out. I doubt you could even find one and it would be very expensive!

So sadly there is no standard way of upgrading your system. I would recommend you look at some of the external Thunderbolt 2 or USB3 SSD's as a better option.
