Is it safe to still use OSX Lion?

I have an old, white Macbook 4.1 13" Early 2008 model, that still runs relatively fine, except for the fact that Apple stopped supporting it and the last version of OSX I'm able to install is 10.7.5 Lion.

As the machine is too slow to do any multitasking, it is perfect for distraction-less writing. However, as I use Dropbox to sync my files between this computer and my other stationary, I'm a bit concerned about how susceptible I am to online attacks?

So what are the dangers of still using OSX Lion? Am I safe as long as I don't do any surfing or install any new programs, or is it just a question of time before my whole machine is hacked?

Are there perhaps any protective programs I should try to install, to keep it more secure?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Mac OSX is quite safe. OSX Lion, although being outdated, should still be fine.

There are few hacks and viruses because it isn't really easy to get them like on windows because OSX is very secure, so few people make viruses.

Lion is probably still more secure than Windows. Did you hear about all the ransomware attacks? Notice how they only happened on Windows machines.

As long as your not on shady sites installing shady programs, you should be fine.

If you want, you can put the latest version of Windows on these laptops, but OSX is probably still more secure.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks for your reply Cameron. To me, however, it sounds more like a "gut feeling" of yours than a technical answer. I'm facing the same question as was asked in the original post. My gut feeling however tells me that there must be multiple exposed vulnerabilities by now that were never addressed by any update for Lion. Thus I would like to know whether anyone with enough technical insight could comment on if using such a machine behind a firewall of a modern router and possibly behind another software firewall on the machine itself (any suggestions which?) might still be safe despite Lion not having received updates for ages... That is assuming to be using a modern browser and not the Lion version of Safari of course. Thanks.

I disagree on the viruses. Apple is probably no longer issuing security updates for Loin. Apple products have become increasingly vulnerable to virus attacks over the last five years. In decades past Apple was not the target of attacks because they were the underdog and everyone went after Bill Gates because of the money. Now Apple has become a Target because of their greed. I feel it is almost mandatory to have a good paid for anti-virus on Macs now. 70% of the machines I get in are infected. Just stay away from the Russian product Kaspersky.
