The case is dented where the MagSafe plugs in. How do I fix this?

Hi my Mac dropped on the floor causing the MagSafe charging port to be dented.

Anyone knows how to fix it or how much it will cost to repair? Thanks

This is repairable!

Can you give us your exact model so we can point you to the needed guide and parts. Go to this web site: EveryMac - Lookup Plug in your systems S/N which you can find either on the bottom cover or 'About This Mac' under the Apple menu bar Icon. Paste your systems URL here so we can see what you have.

What year is the MacBook?

by

Honestly, its made of Aluminum, so if you can chisel away excess aluminum blocking the connection, you will be absolutely fine.

by

Tech. That probably isnt a great idea as more damage could be caused in the process. Due to @danj 's answer, he probably know the perfect way to make it look decent again without destroying it.

by

@cam2363 is correct, using a chisel on a MacBook is ill advised, a mid case replacement is easy and there are plenty of guides to assist. We still need to know the year of the unit to proceed

@jamesliu - Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow to take your system apart: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Upper Case Assembly Replacement and this is the part: MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2015) Upper Case Assembly.

Update (05/13/2017)

Sadly your damage is just too much to salvage the case.

While I do recommend the full assembly you can also get the upper case frame without the battery & trackpad saving some money. But, then you introduce the risk of damaging the battery if you puncture it or crack a cell in the process of removing it. While it can be done using a bit of Ethanol to break the glues binding and slowly lifting the battery with plastic guitar picks just be careful around the ribbon cable to the trackpad when transferring the Battery & Trackpad.

I would also look for a used uppercase online as well.

Is there anyway to only remove the dent instead of buying the a completely new one? Cuz the battery and trackpad is perfectly fine.

$800!!! I could build a gaming desktop for that price!

Really what to do in a situation like this is fix the case. You could take a rotary tool and cut away a square patch from the ruined area. Then, cut a peice of fresh aluminum, exactly the size. Carefully hammer it in, then solder around the edges. Take the rotary tool with a sanding tool attached, and sand away any burs inside the port hole.

by

@pccheese care to tell us about soldering aluminum?

by

Sorry, ment micro-welding. That wouldn't really work either. I guess good ol' super glue and tape!

by

@pccheese - Just not possible here, the MagSafe socket area is too badly damaged for any reconstructive process.
