iBook G3 Software and Boot Problems

I have had my iBook in storage for years (just like all of my other questions) and haven't used it for a long time. When I turned it on all I saw was the Apple logo and it went on forever. Then when I tried booting it up with a software disc it worked. But when I start the download, every time I try to do it it gets an error. Do you know what is wrong?

What "download" are you talking about? What's the error?

When I insert the disk and hold down C it works. But once I get to the part when it starts to download the stuff, every time it says it can't do it. What is the problem with it?

Specifically what is the error, i.e. what is the exact text of the message? Without knowing that, I'd say most likely the media is scratched or damaged, so I'd clean it and try again, or try different media if that one doesn't end up working. You can also load that computer from another computer/drive in target mode via FireWire if necessary, since early iBook optical drives can be very temperamental and your drive may be the problem.

It said "There were errors installing this disk. Please try again.

Are you using either the Black "Retail" software or machine specific for your computer. If not that may be your trouble.

That means it's having physical problems reading the media, i.e. either it's a bad CD, or a touchy drive. If it was the wrong version of the software for your computer, it would reject it and tell you it's the wrong version, and it wouldn't even start loading the OS on your machine. Keep in mind also that iBook G3 optical drives and very touchy are horrible with burned media (not to mention just plain old at this point), so if it's not an original, that could be the problem. Try putting the CD in an external Firewire optical drive, or boot it off another computer's optical drive with that computer in target mode. It's also worth wiping off the CD to make sure it's not dirty or covered in smudges.

I have the gray disk that came with the computer when I bought it. Where do I get a external Firewire optical drive. Where is the cheapest website to buy it off of? I really need this computer fixed. I know it has the original drive inside of it. I also tried cleaning the disk.

eBay is likely going to be your best bet.
