1st gen ipad have charging symbol but percentage not rising

Hi , i have a 1st gen ipad which does not seem to be charging , i got some charge back into the battery ( about 30 %) using a bench psu , so i'm assuming battery is ok

I have been checking voltages around the board , ( ive included the schematic , page 17 , i couldnt save 1 page for some reason )

i have 4.2 volts at L1900 & L1950 .

Which line should be charger voltage back to the battery ?

what do you use the iPad for ?

by

if you are use the device and charging it at the same time you are damaging the battery. so if you re doing that you may need a new battery, but depending on what you use it for I would just get a new iPad. Because it is out dated , newer ones have better cameras, etc.

by

i bought it not working with a view to repair it , i have fixed not charging on a couple of i phones recently , but there doesnt seem to be a u2 chip on this , lol .

trying to learn the charge circuit .

by

@needwifi2021 that is completely false. It just charges the battery slower.

by

I got hold of another battery and that seems to have fixed it ! ..

The old battery took charge from my bench ps though and is still showing a steady 3.8 v now ..

I guess just because a battery can take and hold charge it doesnt mean its ok .

Hopefully you are using it with a Mac. If so. download and run Coconut battery. There is an icon on it with and iOS device. Click on it to find out the status of your battery. Someone may have a better idea if you are using a PC. http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutba...

UPDATE 4/20/17

Yes the coconut Battery seems to be working and your iPhone looks good. However it looks like it does not see the iPad battery.

I have i backup bot and it is not seeing the battery .

Coconut battery is not seeing battery either .

I have never seen this happen. Try looking at another iOS device, such as an iPhone and make sure you are running the program correctly.

by

I suspect that the older iPad doesn't communicate charge state. It's the same thing for iPod Touch's.

The iPad uses a totally different charge circuit from more recent iDevices. It seems to differentiate between portrait mode and landscape mode. I have never worked on an original iPad so I can only give you some guidelines.

So in essence:

• PORT_DK_IDGATE / LAND_DK_IDGATE will go low (0V) to "close the switch".

• PPVCC_MAIN_FUSE & BATT_POS are connected together via Q1901 & Q1951 and battery charging occurs.

• When the battery is fully charged, PORT_DK_IDGATE / LAND_DK_IDGATE goes high and cuts the connection between PPVCC_MAIN_FUSE & BATT_POS. However, due to the Body Diode in the MOSFET, BATT_POS can still supply current to PPVCC_MAIN_FUSE and hence the rest of the device.

Hi , yes i was expecting a 1610A2 chip to be there somewhere !! ,, on the Q1901 chip i have these voltages ,

Q1951 chip looks the same and the voltages are also the same as this.

So the Drain of the MOSFET is at 3.8V (which is the battery voltage). The Source is at 4.2V (VCC_MAIN) and the Gate is also at 4.2V. So that means that the circuit is not enabling the charging of the battery. This could be caused by many things but I would check the BATT_NTC_CONN line (if the battery is hot, it will shut down the charge) and the BATTERY_SWI line which feeds back the charge state of the battery. If this line is bad (see FL1900), it will not activate the charge.

by

Hi , i finally got chance to look at this again , i have 0 volts on BATT_NTC_CONN (with charger on ) i have 2.5 vdc on FL1900 with the charger disconnected , i cant get at FL1900 with the charging dock connected , it is under the connector .

by

Have you checked the continuity of FL1900? Do this when the device is powered off.

by

Yes there is continuity through FL1900 , thats a 0 ohm resistor ?
