DVD player wont read.

I place a (DVD) disk into my iBook G4 and it takes it, makes a sound like its starting to "think" for about two seconds, then spits it back out.

However, it reads CD disks with no problems.

I have a DVD player on the computer, so why won't it load?

I have also tried to play Sims 3 (for Mac, obviously) and the same thing -(spitting it back out)- happened.

Please help

First, you need to know how the optical drive works. Basically, there is a different laser for each purpose. For example, there is 1 laser for CD read and another for CD write. When the optical drive is used continuously, some lasers might get misaligned. The result is that you will lose that function. I believe your DVD read laser has become misaligned, so if you want to read DVD's, you have 2 options:

1. Replace the drive.

2. Buy an external drive. They can be found for about $50 at any electronics store. Most of them can even write DVD's!

Hope this helps!

+ agreed, an external will even move to your next Mac.

+ agreed on the external but make sure you get a firewire version so you can boot from it.

It will not read because your iBook does not have a Super drive like mine. When you get an iBook, You have 3 options for it. cd read drive, DVD read drive, and the super drive which burns and reads cds and dvds. you must have the cd one because mine just reads cds and it makes a very loud noise, then slows down and spits it out. I read by apple that mine has a cd only drive. this might be your problem.

If you want it to read discs, you can:

Replace the cd drive with a super drive yourself. (only if you know what your doing)

or get a external dvd/cd drive reader. (Might be pricy)

Hope this helps! ~Sean

All iBook G4s have at least a Combo drive, which can read DVDs. Optical drives can sometimes have a failure that affects one kind of disk, but not the other. If you have this issue, replace it. This goes for all laptops, by the way.
