Black screen at start up?

At start up the power light comes on, the startup can be heard, the screen remains black and after a minute the fan comes on.

Hook it up to an external monitor to isolate the problem.

See if it will start up from your system installation DVD. Hold down "C" key. Go to the second page pull down menu, Utilities -> Disk Utility and see if you can repair the drive. If no drive shows up then replace it.

I used the install disk. The imac turned on, chimed, and the imac screen and the external monitor screen remained black. Does that mean that video card is out or that the display is dead? Any other ideas?

I obtained an adpater and hooked the imac to a external monitor. On startup the chime occurred and the onlight came on, I then held down the apple key, the options key and the P & R keys. After about 15 seconds the startup chime occurred again. Then nothing on either monitor.

Ideas?
