Does an adapter make a difference on a music box?

Mr. Christmas Holiday Music Box

I lost my Mr. Christmas Holiday Music Box adapter. I purchased a universal adapter. My music box is now rotating the music discs backwards. Would an adapter cause a music box to rotate the gears backwards???
