MacBook will not start with battery installed.

I have a 4 year old macbook with it's original battery. Last week it stopped working. It will only power on for a few seconds before shutting itself down, regardless of whether or not the power adaptor is plugged in. The computer starts and works fine when plugged in with no battery installed and if I install a battery when the computer is already on, the battery status displays the current charge and says "battery not charging." The behaviour is the same using a new replacement battery.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

According to which model you have, you may experience styart up problem if the battery charge drops below 20%. To check the status of your battery, download and run Coconut battery and let us know your results. This can also be a problem with your battery connector. Hello there, this sounds like it's the 1151 model. Anyways, you may be experiencing a I/O board issue. I've seen this before but it is usually associated with some type of liquid spillage that people don't mention. Have you replaced ANY hardware recently (about a month ago or so (i.e, top cover, optical drive or hard drive), if so and this issue developed shortly afterwards consider running the hardware test utility from the installation disk pack that came with your computer. My initial thought is that your I/O board needs to be replaced.
