Vertical bar on screen

MacBook (MB063LL/A with Intel GPU) from moment the screen lights up on start has a black vertical bar on the screen from the very top to the bottom. The bar is about 40mm wide and is slightly off center. Just to the left of the bar is a 8mm semi transparent bar. When I take a screen shot and open it in Preview the bars do not appear. I have not tried to connect the MacBook to an alternate display since I do not have the right cable at this time. Pinching the bezel and pressure on the topcase around the hinges has no effect.

My question – is this a screen problem or a GPU problem? If the former, could it be something simple like pinched wires or bad connections or do I have to replace the screen? If it is a GPU problem, it will probably end up on eBay.

Update

The PRAM reset with display changes tried as well as SMC reset and change of HD with OS. RAM removed and replaced.

Problem persists.

Replaced the entire back case and screen with an Ebay purchase and all works well. This does not absolutely mean the screen was shot, it could have been a pinched wire. The pinched wire is unlikely since the mac had not been dropped or otherwise mishandled between when it was working and when it failed.

Chosen Solution

First start by resetting the pram (holding command option p r on restart) until you hear 3 chimes

then when you get into os x. open up system preferences, go to display. change the resolution of your screen to anything but normal. Now change it back to normal. Restart computer and see if the problem is solved.
