Black Screen/ Pantalla negra iMac 27 mid 2011

Hi all,

I have an old Imac 27 mid 2011 top with i7 quad core 3.4 and Ati 6970, recently the screen of the mac does not work properly.

When I start the computer it s black but the Imac works perfectly(I have another screen plug in), but if I wait for a 2 minutes and the imac enter in Slept mode when I turn it on the screen works perfectly during hours, so I think is something like the mac must be warm to work properly.

Does anyone knows how could I repair it?

Thank you very much

Chosen Solution

Apple may possibly still be covering it under this program but it's iffy:

iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program

If not, do a hot air reflow of the GPU chip.

@mayer nice answer. You got this message?

@oldturkey03 - Yes i did, looks like the @ has to be used to get notifications

I'm repairing lots of previously unrepairable machine with this hot air gun. Especially GPU issues on iMacs. Will start on MacBook Pros next week. I'm having about an 80% success rate. Got eight 2007-2011 machines running in the last two weeks that it had been to expensive to replace the GPUs. It sure beats the cost of a rework station. I watched a few of @jessabethany videos to lean how to do it. Thank you Jessa. Now I have a lot of inexpensive machines for the kids for fall. I have 10 or 12 white iMacs I have not gotten to yet. Will try to get those running for under privileged kids. I have several middle school teachers that can get them into the right hands. Next I'll go for the stacks of MacBook Pros with the 8600 nVidia GPUs.

I'm going to be a busy boy, glad I didn't throw them away now.

@mayer yes you need the @ to get notified. Great job on the reflows. One suggestion I have is that you get yourself a good thermometer and proper thermocoupler. Makes the job a lot easier and precise.

@oldturkey03 - do you have suggestions for exact models. But using a old $350 Fluke 561 now costs $180:

Thank you very much, apparently I am going to get it restored!
