i have 8gb and apple are very kindly replacing my motherboard for some unknown reason at their own expense, it made me think well maybe i can upgrade my ram in the process but the only ones that could do it is apple and they would charge a boatload.

They are not being kind. This is the result of a class action law suit.

You might be able to request the upgrade and offer to pay the additional $200 before they replace the board

UPDATE - just talked to an ASP and Apple will not do the upgrade without you buying a whole new board for $1200

Standard RAM: 8 GB Maximum RAM: 16 GB*

Details: *8 GB of RAM is onboard. It originally could be upgraded at the time of purchase to 16 GB as a US$200 option, but it cannot be upgraded subsequently.
