I know it's old but others may find it useful.

I believe the error relates to the HDD fan not spinning up to the required speed

I concur - those AHT codes refer to the Hard Drive/Hard Drive controller. It could be as simple as the connector working loose in transit.

If you are near an Apple Store or AASP, take it in and have them run Apple Service Diagnostics - it is more comprehensive and should help pinpoint the failed subsystem. (ASD is not available to the public.)

For Canada you can find a store via this link that may also repair: http://www.apple.com/ca/buy/locator/

Looks like you need a new hard drive get one here. If you need to recover data I suggest Data Rescue 3, it actually works, I've used it to recover data myself.

Careful with data recovery software on a failing drive. It can make the problem of getting the data more difficult and costly if it doesn't work. These programs put the drive through vigorous use. Like taking your grandma for a marathon run...

Not really actually, it's not that expensive and you usually only need to run it once. Obviously it's not gonna be good if you do it 30 times, but you only need to do it once or twice. That is why trying to clone the drive first is good.

'cause that's what the service manual tells me... there is no reference to the following number but I believe it is the actual speed detected at time of error.
