I use methanol in a syringe and can get a battery out with a putty knife in about 10-15 minutes.

@mayer did you cut into any cells and did the methanol have any kind of reaction with the casing ? how wet did you get it and how long does it take to react to the glue. I actually have a guy at work I've been putting off doing a battery for just because of the mess I made last time .

I've done about ten now with no problems, no tears. The methanol is just a very pure alcohol that the government has added chemicals to to keep you from drinking it. It has almost no water so it can be used in an alcohol torch and burns without sputtering. I get it from a local chemical suppliers. A gallon lasts me about ten years. It loosens up the glue upon contact almost. Squirt lift a little, squirt a little more. It evaporates very quickly. It is very flammable so be careful. Show the customer the removal guide and let them know just how difficult a job this is ( I how the guides to customers all the time and ask them if they're sure they don't want to try themselves ;-) I experimented with several things to find a solution (pun intended) to this problem, so I could get the job done. Trade secret! Don't tell anyone else.

@mayer Here at work I cant tell them to do it themselves or Id be out of a job .This time of year things are slow so this forum has been a nice distraction and it still looks like Im working haha. I think I'll give this a try and see how it goes . Thanks alot for the advice .

Actually there is no guide for replacing the battery, just the teardown. Remember, the iFixit guides are written by kids that do guides, not everyday techs like us that have to figure out answers to problems. Sorry for the slam iFixit team, sometimes the truth hurts.

@jimfixer Jim, have you done this? Is it time for me to write a new guide?

by

@mayer I have done this once and wont do it again I torn most of the cells as they were coming out and used a sharpened putty knife to get them out .I thought just for a moment about using some sort of solvent to make the glue more pliable but decided against it after cutting into the first cell, heat was never an option. They didn't need to be that aggressively glued in .When cleaning up the mess after I was told its best to use distilled water or milk as the lithium is real nasty stuff Was also warned not to use any alcohol based product or solvent

by

Jim, can you say more about where you got this warning from? I suppose if you tore into the battery it could cause an arc and ignite the alcohol.
