Well, I'm sorry to tell you. There is no sd card for iPhone. They have chips, that are soldered onto the logic board, that dictate how much storage the device has. You can use, and purchase, iCloud storage. However, I've noticed people saying that doesn't help. I don't like using it. With iPhones, bigger memory is better memory

You have to desolder the chip, put it on the programmer to load low-level data (unit S/N, MLB S/N, model code and other stuff like that). Then write it into the new chip and solder it back on. It is possible and we already have a few vendors offering this service in China. Not economically viable for iPhone 4s however.

And it is possible that Apple will add more verifications in the update so phones with replaced memory chips might break.

Sorry, Tom is totally right. It is a possibility. Technically on the outside; as micro soldering is still a new thing. At least in the states. You could hit up Jessa Jones at iPad Rehab. I think she's east coast, and her business is mail in. Also, not sure if error 53 affects i4S. But any tampering with your iDevice, followed by an iOS update, could result in bricking your phone. So, basically, don't update. Apples new stuff is not your friend
