How do you replace a hard drive on iMac

I have an iMac and the hard drive failed. Do you have a step-by-step guide for a novice to follow?

Problem solved -- I actually forgot to re-attach the cable (the one with the two screws). Once I did -- everything worked smoothly and the re-installation from my Time Machine worked smoothly (albeit it took 20 hours to transfer everything). I would never have attempted doing anything inside my iMac without you folks -- many thanks. You've demystified what was hidden inside the Mac! Again, thanks!

I tried that -- everything seemed to go smoothly. When I started my computer (with the Snow Leopard disk), I got an initial chime and black screen. I heard the hard drive whirring like it was trying to read the new hard drive. No Apple symbol, no nothing.

I tried rebooting holding the C-key -- still nothing.

We don't know which iMac you have. Here's all of them iFixit has guides for.
