Most likely the WLED chip. See this answer: Location of the WLED driver

Does the apple store or any other stores have the WLED chip?

If they did they wouldn't sell it. Try these good folks: http://www.rossmanngroup.com

There can be 2 solutions of your problem:

1) Reset PRAM (NVRAM)

"- Shut down your Mac.

- Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.

- Turn on your Mac.

- Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.

- Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.

- Release the keys."

2) Your LCD screen/flat cable problem and you need the replacement (more likely)

Thank you for replying so quickly but I already tried resetting the PRAM. How much do you think it would cost to replace the LCD screen/flat cable

And I think it's worth mentioning that when I shine a light to the display I can just see the apple logo and a loading bar but after the bar has completed it would shut down the laptop

If you can see the Apple logo in the dark, maybe its the backlight problem or booting issue (hard disk cable, hard disk or smthing like that). Do you hear any sounds like beeps?

by

The only sound is the startup chime

I would go with setting up a new OS X then.
