If my screen is cracked, can i just replace it with a new matrix display? Or do I need to purchase and reassemble the entire LCD display?

Not sure I follow you here. If the display is damaged your only option is to replace it with the correct part. If you have access to an external monitor you could try using it instead connected to the Thunderbolt (mini DisplayPort) connection.

I would recommend you review the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 Display Assembly Replacement to see if this is something you can do on your own as well as order the needed part.

Short answer; yes you must replace the entire display assembly. Long answer; technically you could just replace the matrix LCD, but it is very difficult and Apple, nor any other self service center will even attempt replace it, they will just replace the entire display assembly. I would recommend replacing the entire display, but if you really know what you are doing, and want to take a risk it is possible to just replace the matrix LCD.
