Why is my MacBook freezing and restarting itself?

My macbook has been freezing (no mouse or keyboard response) for many days now. I've fixed the permissions reinstalled the OS and still had this problem. I thought it was bad ram so I took out the ram sticks one by one to see if one of them was bad. Ram worked fine but problem persisted. I recently tried to reinstall Snow Leopard using the CD but my computer froze when I was checking the utilities. (It would also occasionally restart itself after a Freeze). Is this a logic board Problem?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Tough problem. Start up with the original System installation disk that came with the Book by inserting the disk and holding down the "D" key. Run the diagnostics and tell us the results please.

My initial install disk has the apple hardware test version 3A104 (not sure if this is helpful). I ran both the regular and extended hardware tests. Both times the tests found no problems with my hardware.

Since my macbook is 4 years old, I wondered if it could be an overheating problem that is causing the random shutdowns and restarts. I bought some thermal paste, removed the heatsink and reapplied thermal paste, I also cleaned the fan. I'm not sure if this was the problem yet since I basically did this last night but so far so good. Thanks for telling me about the diagnostics CD though, it helped me think of other things that could be wrong if it wasn't hardware. Thanks mayer. :)
