Home button works until phone is closed up

I replaced the screen on the phone and everything works great to test out. I close up the phone and the home button doesn't work. Open it up again to see what the problem is and the home button works again. It suffered a pretty serious crash and the shield for the home button flex connector is gone. Will the lack of shield cause this? Is there something I could use to make a home made one or does anyone know where I could buy one?

The lack of shield will definitely cause this, as there is nothing for the home button to press in to.

You can find them pretty easily, type in on eBay iPhone 5S home button shield. Or you can find them relatively easy on any parts site. :-)
