For installation purposes on a 13" MacBook Unibody, model A1278, are the Matshita UJ898 and Hitachi GS23N drives equivalent, ie., they both fit without any problem?

if either come up in a vendors search engine. If they don't then it's drawer hight, style that is the problem, not width (all optical disks are the same width).
though you may need a firmware update after installing- Apple software update should detect the need.
