Fix or should I mod? iMac 24"

The IMac initiates boots / with chime and all, but it shows vertical lines and gets stuck on the Apple logo until it freezes. I have tried all resets combination found online, still no luck. If I try booting with the option key to select USB drive or hard drive...I can see them ( still with vertical lines ) and after selecting either or it looks like it is going to start but then freezes. While checking cable connections, I notice behind the screen panel was extremely hot, so Im assuming the Imac it is self shutting ifself down. I am wondering should I keep trying to fix it or mod it all together removing the logic boards and guts and modding it with a small mini-itx board that could support i7 cpu's. Anyone else here had any experience doing such mods? I read somewhere in this forum, that the Imac 24" screen is made by NEC and they made same monitor size for PC's, maybe buy and old monitor and use instead? Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Also....all 4 diagnostic led lights are on

It sounds like the display is gone. Do you have access to an external monitor? If you do see if you get a clean image on it when you boot up after letting it sit to cool down. Do you see a clean image before the system shuts down?

If you have a second Mac you could also try starting your system up in Target mode connected to your second Mac see if you can access the HD.

As to converting your system its not designed for a ATX board, you really can mod it. Sorry

Thanks for your answe... But I had tried the video out port to the hdmi on the tv and I get exactly the same results... There is never a clean image. Always with the vertical lines

Thats not good ;-{ Then the GPU has gone. You'll need to either replace the complete logic board or if you can find just the graphics card replace it alone here. Here's the needed steps: iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267 Graphics Card Replacement. While this is not your model it is the same steps.

How can I troubleshoot to be sure if it is the logicboard or the video card?

If you have access to a second mac you could start your system up in target mode and though a FireWire connection access your systems HD via the other mod. What I would do here is when starting up your other mac select your systems HD as boot drive for the other mac. Then setup your mac so it can be remotely accessed (Desktop Sharing). Now after your restart your mac via an Ethernet network you should be able to access your system via the desktop sharing from your other mac. While this sounds confusing what you're doing here is getting your system to be running off its own drive but accessing it remotely to see if its working. If it is you know the video board is blown.
