Unable to install to hard drive

I have replaced the hard drive (and DVD) in my iMac. I can now boot using the OS X DVD.

the system will not allow me to install OS X. It will however let me see the disk in disk utilities and format it.

Am I suffering as I appear to have the SATA II version of the original drive.

New HDD

1000GB 3,5" Seagate Barracuda ST31000340AS SATA II 7200 rpm

I am so close to resurrecting the iMac. Just one more step....

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

What system is on the installation DVD? Is this the disk that came with THIS computer? Are you using a retail OSX installation disk?

I'm using the OS X (snow leopard) DVD that came with my daughter's iMac as my original is sadly lost. It is the same version of OS X that came with my iMac.

The gray system installation disks are machine specific. Go here and get a retail version of Snow Leopard for $20.00: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z...

Many thanks for your help. As you said, with the right disk this was easy.

Impressed (in some ways) that the disks that come with the iMac are so specific.
