How can I replace the camera lens on the Samsung Galaxy S5?

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S5. Everything works great. Unfortunately, I picked it up this morning and found that the camera lens is cracked. The screen protector on the lens is still intact, but the lens looks like a spider web. Searching online, I found a handful of people with the same issue—but no way to fix it myself. The only current option I found was to send it to Samsung directly, but I would be without a phone for up to 2 weeks, and it would cost at least $70. I was hoping I could find the part online and fix it myself, but I wasn't able to turn up anything. Is the phone just so new that this particular part is not yet available?

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately there isn't a Samsung store nearby. I've packed the phone up and dropped it off with UPS earlier today. It's now on its way to Texas for a repair. I'm already going through withdrawals and I've only been without a phone for about 14 hours.

you can purchase replacement lenses a variety of places online i.e. amazon, there are also videos on you tube giving you a step by step method to replacing the lens itself. The process is tedious, however with some patience and determination, you can complete this replacement rather smoothly.

Chosen Solution

Actually, I did remove it , but the most difficult for me was to find the most suitable replacement parts because there still no in market and to keep the phone water resistant still. So I only can share you it's possible but not deprecated.

That's what i did to an original S5 midframe replacement:

1. The camera lens cover/ring can pry from that corner with much effort.

2. Remove the camera lens cover, a lot adhesive can be seen here. The inner edges are glued black adhesive to seal the edges of camera lens, the outer edges are glued with crystal adhesive to seal the cover edges. That two kinds of adhesive sticker are the waterproof adhesive for S5.

3. Now we can see the camera lens. And use the tweezers to insert into the edges of camera lens and cut the adhesive under the camera lens, and can remove the camera lens.

4. Have a look at the removed camera lens. It's really weak. The lacquer along the edges have been scratched.

5. Sorry i removed the black adhesive felt pad (i don't know how to name it), but you can still see a little there. Maybe you can imagine what is full of the black adhesive except the center.

Samsung really do a lot for achieving water resistant which proved by replacing a broken camera lens. Fixing is really not easy, and a lot original adhesive are needed.

At least for now, it's not wise to repair it yourself. So good luck to you!

I ran into the same repair in my shop the other day. Yup, you can send it to Texas or order the part from China and wait, but, for a simple fix (you do have to use some precision and care), a little dab of Permatex 80338 Black Rubber Sealant around just the inside lip of the frame will hold the piece in, water seal it, and can easily be removed / replaced when the "proper" part is more available.

If you want to be "very precise" you can take the (square) top off of one of those 7-day pill box containers, fill it with permatex, run a razor across the top to make it smooth and let it set. Once it is set, you can then remove it (it will be rubbery) and you can use an xacto to precisely trim out the perfect piece.

Some folks forget that electronics repair isn't all about plug and play, many times you have to think outside of the box and find things (and in many cases) that work better than the original design.

Just a little dab will doo ya'

Extremely easy and cheap fix. Replacement lens is available on eBay for about $6 shipped.

1. Take the phone cover off.

2. Pry the silver bezel off.

3. Pry or rake off the cracked or broken lens.

4. Scrape off the black adhesive residue.

5. Clean actual camera lens to ensure no dust is on it.

6. Peel backing off new lens and stick it on.

7. Peel backing off new bezel and stick it on.

8. Reinstall phone cover.

9. Enjoy not being out $70 bucks and two weeks with a loaner phone.

10. Wonder why Samsung chose to use such a fragile lens material for a camera that's designed to protrude from the phone.

11. Realize that you should have ordered a few kits because this will happen again...

James Ferguson, this is a new phone and as such you should have warranty on it. I am all for repairing devices by yourself, but in this case, make use of the warranty that. The $70 will be wisely spend. you are going to possibly void your phones warranty by doing any repair on it, you may also have problems finding the right parts for it. 2Weeks without your phone and $70 are a small price to pay. Hope this helps, good luck

Thanks. I'm leaning towards that option now after coming up with nothing in numerous searches. After thinking about it some more, I think it might be an interesting experience to go without a phone for two weeks in this day and age. How long can I survive before digging up my old Droid X to use in the interim?

by

No longer than 2 days:-) Best of luck to you.

You can find the camera lens cover on the iFixit store. If the rear-facing camera itself is broken, we have a replacement guide in addition to the part.
