Why does my iPod show a folder with a warning sign?

My iPod shows a folder with a warning sign and below it the words www.apple.com/support/iPod. What could the problem be and how can it be fixed?

normally that would mean that the hard drive of the iPod needs to be replaced - any clicking sounds in the past ?

since the link i wanted to add is a little bit censored, i can only recommend you a googe search with: "iPod diagnostic mode" <- use it incl. the " - the first result should give you some informations about the diagnostic mode and how to verify your harddrive without the use of a computer
