G4 PowerBook external sound stopped

I have 2 g-4 PowerBooks, a 667 and a 867 and the external sound in both stopped working. The sound is turned on and sound works thru headphones. Any ideas how to fix the internal sound. In an apple discussion group others had the same problem and no one knew why the sound stopped

Options

- try PMU and PRAM reset.

- try repair permissions

- To know if the issue is hardware or software try to boot from another source than your internal HD (use firewire target mode with a compatible Mac with working sound or use a firewire external drive)

Since it's the same for both machines and the headphones work, I would suspect the external speaker to be the problem.

maybe the audio jack's are stuck in "headphone position" ....
