What is the putty like substance the GPU (not thermal paste)?

Recently I upgraded a GPU for a relative on her iMac 2211 . I noticed a white putty/grease like compound in areas surrounding the GPU. It was not thermal paste, as this substance was thick and covered the chips/components near and around the GPU.

I've read elsewhere that the GPU can oftentimes (if not too far gone) be cleaned and resurfaced with TP. People have reported that their graphics issues have been resolved after doing just that.

#1. Does anyone know what the above mentioned substance is and where it can be purchased from?

  1. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge with cleaning and re-applying thermal paste? Specifically what has been the outcome?

Thank you

You are most likely talking about the thermal pads. You buy a large piece of thermal pad and you can cut them to size for your GPU. Here is a link to a smaller piece that you could still cut from on Amazon.
