I purchased a battery for my MacBook laptop and need to install it. I am wondering what is involved in removing the back panel, removing the old battery and inserting the new one.

Properly (not generically) identify your machine and follow the guide.
Study the guide (not just read it) many first time DIYers tear off connectors because they didn't unlock cams, or, pulled in the wrong direction.
Obtain the recoomened tools - every job is easier when you use the proper tools.

What model is it, is it a unibody?

You'll want to be more specific. Apple has revised the battery designs drastically in their portables over the past 7-8 years. It would be great if you could post a model number (A1386, etc, usually found on bottom of Mac) or use iFixit's model identifier tool to help narrow it down. http://www.ifixit.com/info/ID-your-Mac/4
