What disk are you trying to boot from and are you holding down the "C" key? Also try the option key. To eject the disk, hold down the mouse button on startup.

The os on the disk is 10.5 and the harddrive is OS 10.5.8

Is the DVD gray or is it a retail installation disk (black)?

by

black disk. don't have the grey one for that model.

Depends on the OS are you trying to use. Pre-Installed MacOS:X 10.3.7, Maximum MacOS: X 10.5.8 if you're trying to use Snow Leopard or Lion, or Mountain Lion there's your problem.
