No indicators lighting when battery is being charged
Machine working ok on A.C. mains supply, but when charging battery, no indicator light on battery ON. Is battery dead or some other problem?

Most likely yes - though if you've spilled on or dropped the laptop you could have a damaged DC in board.
Check the battery status under /Applications/Utilities->System Information (profiler):Power. Batteries die - then you replace them. How long they last depends upon use/abuse.
