How long has this been happening--what OS are you using--has it ever recognized the hard drive? Ralph

Change the port you are plugged into. Go to Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility and see if that program will see it, if so try to repair it. Check your external enclosure to see if it is powering up. I would also change the cable to the enclosure.

All the Titanium models have poor and easy to blow firewire port. I would be not surprised if yours was dead. Try a known working firewire device in the port to troubleshoot it.

Now if you talk about a USB external drive, maybe you need to connect the drive in the two USB ports to give it enough power to mount on the desktop.
