Install on an USB drive

When I run my install program off of the disk, while I can 'see' the USB drive, it will not allow me to install onto it.

I read the other answers to this question but there was not enough detail on how to overcome the USB hurdle I've encountered. I have done this same evolution to a FireWire drive but never a USB.

Any assistance or steps to do this as a work around?

You can only boot a Intel Mac from a USB drive. The older Power Mac based cpu's will only boot from firewire drives. Here's Apple's article on "Starting from an external USB storage device (Intel-based Macs)": http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1948
