Changed hard drive but OS gives error on installation

I've tried to change my old 120GB hdd with a new 500GB Sata 2 hdd, and the OSX snow leopard always fail. but when I re-install snow leopard on the original hdd it installs without a fuss, so I placed the new hdd in an enclosure and it installed perfectly, why can't the OS install with the hdd inside of the imac?

Sounds like your new hard drive is to fast, it probably needs to be jumpered down to 1.5 Gb/s. Do a web search for the name of your drive and jumpers to find the correct settings.
