keep a HD from mounting in target mode?

I have a 24" Core Duo iMac that isn't booting other than power and status light. It won't mount in target mode. The LED diagnostics only light #1 and #2. So obviously it is either logic board or gpu. Is it safe to assume it is the logic board since there is no sign of life outside power?

Everything looks good. I re-seated the gpu after re-applying thermal paste since I have found that the climate where I live seems to harden paste. No change in status after that.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Sorry I must not have been clear at all. I'm not concerned about the drive. I'm trying to determine if it's the logic board or gpu and I was thinking it's the logic board since I can't get the drive to mount using target mode. I wasn't sure if a bad GPU could logically stop that process.

The question was really meant to be, "can a bad GPU stop the drive from mounting?" As in, can I use that evidence to rule out the GPU?

Have you booted while connected to an external monitor? LED 2 claims the logic board is OK, while #3 tells if the computer and display are "talking"... so what you're seeing is indication of GPU/LCD failure. . . which would stop the boot process. However if the fault is in the display chain an external monitor should allow the process to continue-AFAIK you can't run an iMac "headless".

Thank you. And I hadn't noticed that my title was cut off making it much harder to understand the question.....Apple says if no LED #3 than verify GPU and verify logic board. I only bring it up because now I am a little confused based on your comment that LED #2 claims the logic board is okay.....In terms of testing with an external display my issue is that I live in a relatively remote spot and don't have the proper cables for testing. I also don't currently have an external other than a TV that amazingly only has RCA and s-video connections.....I really appreciate your patience and knowledge, Machead. You have been very helpful in my questions and previously answered archives I have read through.

Thank you. You should put one of your last two comments in the answers so I can accept one as an answer.
