Grey screen appears at startup

Grey screen appears at startup, with chime, takes about ten minutes staying on a Grey screen, and suddenly a little Finder folder icon appears in the middle of the screen, staring me in the face and wont do anything again.

I would suspect the hard drive. Try to boot the PB from another source and report the result.
