Permanently remove optical drive for weight loss purposes

I own a mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro. I never use the optical drive, so I would like to get rid of it all together. Mostly to lose weight.

Can I safely remove the optical drive without putting a replacement drive/hdd in place? Or must this space by some means be occupied by a device?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,
