iPod won't work when disconected from charger

My iPod works when plugged in to the wall charger, but not when I unplug it. It says it's charged but when I unplug it it's dead.

How old is it? It sounds like your battery needs replacing.

if no residual charge - either the wire to the battery is broken, or the charging circuitry is stuffed
