My Problem
iPhone 4S out of warranty for less then a month. The speaker that is used for making the noise you hear for telephone rings and notification or to play music, stopped working all of a sudden. Was taken to a fairly well equipped apple store where the only option they presented was to try and fix it for $60 with no guarantee warranty on parts and labour.
My Fix
For the part(iPhone 4 and 4S Speaker Enclosure) and tool(iPhone 5-Point Pentalobe Screwdriver) I needed. The cost was far less, $38 from iFixit compared the $65 Apple Genius Bar Employee offered. Simply by following the iFixit guide and with the tool i needed; dismantling, replacing the part, and re-assembling was a breeze. Took about an hour when going at a leisurely pace watching some online videos.
My Advice
Removing the battery was not necessary for this repair of replacing the iphone 4s speaker enclosure. so i recommend skipping it as the battery is set in there pretty well but does not interfere with the removal of speaker enclosure.
