My Problem
Severely cracked screen
My Fix
Initially tried the build with a screen from another vendor, which didn't include the camera/earpiece assembly. While trying to transfer the camera/earpiece parts over to the new screen, there were two very tiny parts, a rubber one and a plastic one with a small metal brace. I had difficulty placing them back in, and ignored them, but now realize that this probably created a short in that circuitry, as the new screen didn't work, and when I tried the cracked screen again, that no longer worked. So I order a screen with the camera/earpiece reassembled, and it worked like a charm.
My Advice
Buy a preassembled screen if possible. Also, even those tiny parts that don't have any circuitry and look like they're just there to hold something in place, yeah, they're important. Seems like obvious advice, but even after all my experience working in electronics, I still managed to overlook it.
