My Problem

My 21.5" iMac had a bad hard drive and I wanted to up the memory from 8 to 16 while I was going to be in there working on the drive.

My Fix

I have to say, the only part that scared me was prying the glass screen off of the unibody. Most sites recommend the guitar pick method and that just seemed fraught with danger. I imagined my screen cracked in half and me having to buy a new iMac. This kit includes a genius "pizza cutter" that lets you open the case in about 60 seconds. It prevents you from sticking the pry tool in too deep and damaging an antennae cable or the camera. Seriously, I ran the opener around the outside about three times and it opened without issue. WONDERFUL.

My Advice

Have a video of the change handy. There are some on this site and on other sites. Seeing the video is much more helpful than the static pictures. And don't expect things to match perfectly between what you see in your machine and what the video or picture shows because Apple makes slight changes throughout the manufacturing lifespan of a unit.. But, if patient and organized, you can service this iMac! The hard drive was super easy. The memory is a harder task as you pretty much have to take everything out to change it. Use a safe static free mat to work on, have plenty of room to remove parts and screws and have some sticky notes or something available to label things/screws so that you remember where they go.
