My Problem
I switched my phone carrier to a much less expensive carrier, but brought my old iPhone 5 along for the ride. I was on a 200 mile gravel grinder bike race, and I guess my phone got quite shook up, as it would not charge unless I wrapped the lightning cable around it. I tried cleaning out the lint with a toothpick, but still no go. A little research brought me to the ifixit site, and I ordered the new lightning connector, along with a battery replacement kit which had most of the tools need for the Lightning connector repair.
My Fix
Wow, replacing the Lightning connector took me 4 hours, even though I'm a tinkerer and DIY kind of guy. The guide was great, although the video skipped a few of the steps early on and I stopped watching it and followed the online guide. Most everything had to be removed including the logic board. This repair is not for the feint of heart. I got it done, but I was worried as my phone was completely in parts on the table. My wife reminded me that normal people do not attempt such things (did she call me abnormal?) I wound up ordering the wrong battery, for an iPhone 5s which was not compatible with my iPhone 5, so I called and they were very helpful, offering to take back the battery and refund me no questions.
My Advice
There were a lot of tiny screws that needed to be managed. I did not order the magnet pad, but that seems like a great thing to have. I used some fridge magnets to help me keep the screws in order.
