No need to replace the trackpad - it was the battery all along!
My Problem
The trackpad in my 2009 era MacBook Pro had stopped functioning normally, and I was prepared to attempt a trackpad replacement - far more involved and costly than a mere battery replacement.
Upon opening up the Mac to investigate the trackpad situation, I realized that the battery was swelling up, and in the process pressing against the underside of the trackpad. I removed the battery and discovered that the trackpad worked perfectly.
Thus, I ordered a new battery instead of a new trackpad.
My Fix
Piece of cake to replace the battery - about as easy as a MacBook Pro repair gets.
My Advice
Just make sure you have the right tools required to remove the battery, as the screws that hold the battery in place aren't standard phillips screws. iFixit's screwdriver kit is fantastic because each tool is imprinted with its size, making repairs a breeze.
